Carl Wheeler
Master Craftsman | Furniture Maker | Architectural Woodworker
For more than 42 years, Carl Wheeler has dedicated his career to the art of fine woodworking. Specializing in custom cabinetry, architectural millwork, historic restoration, furniture making, trim work, and custom stair design and construction, Carl combines traditional craftsmanship with creative problem-solving to produce work that is both beautiful and enduring.
Carl has built his reputation on integrity, reliability, and meticulous attention to detail. He believes in doing things right the first time, standing behind his work, and earning trust through honest communication, thoughtful planning, and consistent quality craftsmanship.
Known for his quick wit, "punny" sense of humor, and engaging personality, Carl brings energy and good humor to every project. He genuinely enjoys solving problems, tackling unique challenges, and finding creative ways to turn a client's vision into reality. For Carl, every project is an opportunity to refine a technique, learn something new, or discover a better way to build. The more unusual the challenge, the more likely he is to smile and say, “Let’s figure it out.”
Carl holds an Associate in Occupational Studies (AOS) in Building Construction from Alfred State College and a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Education from SUNY Oswego.
His work has been featured in Architectural Digest.
Heidi Schlegel, NCIDQ
Architectural Designer | Interior Designer | Business Manager
As Cape Cod Craftsman's in-house architectural designer and business manager, Heidi combines decades of design expertise with a passion for helping clients see the possibilities for their projects. The Bonnie to Carl's Clyde, she loves a good design challenge and is often the person asking, "What if we tried this instead?"
Heidi's areas of expertise include interior architecture, aging-in-place design, sustainability, and historic preservation. She believes great design is about much more than making something look beautiful. The best spaces thoughtfully balance function, comfort, environmental psychology, craftsmanship, aesthetics and timelessness to create environments that truly support, and represent the people who live in them.
Whether she's helping preserve or enhance the character of a building, designing a custom built-in or timeless furniture piece, improving accessibility for future needs, or finding creative solutions to a design challenge, Heidi enjoys solving puzzles, and helping clients imagine possibilities they may not have considered.
Heidi holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design from Rochester Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Architecture with a specialty in Interior Design from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
After a rewarding career at Rochester Institute of Technology, where she served as Associate Professor of Interior Design and Associate Director of the School of Design, Heidi retired in 2026 to join Cape Cod Craftsman full-time. While she may have traded the classroom for the workshop, she still brings a teacher’s mindset to her work—especially when helping clients understand the design process and make informed decisions.
Heidi continues to research and publish on collaborative design, focusing on cultural context, lived experience, and how people engage with, and interpret space.
Although her background is rooted in design and education, Heidi is rarely confined to a desk. Clients will often find her in the workshop, on the jobsite, or brainstorming solutions alongside Carl. Their partnership is built on constant collaboration, and blending design thinking with hands-on craftsmanship to create projects that are both thoughtful and expertly executed.
At Cape Cod Craftsman, craftsmanship and design come together through a collaborative approach rooted in trust, experience, and shared problem-solving. As a family-owned business, we believe exceptional results come from more than skill alone—they come from honesty, respect, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
We take pride in clear communication, thoughtful design, quality materials, and workmanship that stands the test of time. Our goal is not simply to complete projects, but to build lasting relationships with our clients by delivering work we are proud to put our name on.
Whether we're crafting a custom piece of furniture, solving a unique problem, or helping a client envision new possibilities for their space, our promise remains the same: thoughtful design, quality craftsmanship, and service you can trust.
